About Chamonix

Some 20km long the Chamonix Valley rests between the Massif du Mont Blanc to the South East and the Aiguilles Rouges to the North West in the French Alps.

Laying under the shadow of Mont Blanc the valley is home to the towns of Chamonix, Argentiere and Les Houches as well as many other smaller villages such as Le Tour, Les Praz and Les Tines.

The valley was carved by glaciers during the Quartenary period (the Quartenary period started around 2.5 million years ago until present, the last ice-age in Europe was only 10,000 years ago). Since then years of natural erosion have helped shape the distinctive, somewhat ominous looking, thin granite spires of the mountain peaks of the valley (called Aiguilles; French for needle) that tower over the towns and villages below.
