About ChamonixSome 20km long the Chamonix Valley rests between the Massif du Mont Blanc to the South East and the Aiguilles Rouges to the North West in the French Alps.
The valley was carved by glaciers during the Quartenary period (the Quartenary period started around 2.5 million years ago until present, the last ice-age in Europe was only 10,000 years ago). Since then years of natural erosion have helped shape the distinctive, somewhat ominous looking, thin granite spires of the mountain peaks of the valley (called Aiguilles; French for needle) that tower over the towns and villages below. |
