About ChamonixChamonix was originally a priory set up at around the turn of the 12th Century consisting of a farm and a mill.
The priory ceased to be in 1786 after the residents of Chamonix payed a substantial sum of money in order to be freed from the obligation to pay church taxes. Since that time Chamonix has evolved into one of (if not the) best centres for Alpine activities in the world. As well as being famous for the fantastic ski slopes Chamonix is also a popular summer destination with many activities on offer, from walking and mountain biking to more extreme activities such as parapenting (i.e. jumping off mountains equipped with a parachaute). It is a common sight to see parapenters flying above the peaks and then coming down to land in the landing field close to the centre of Chamonix.
