About Chamonix

The most distinctive feature of the Chamonix valley is, of course, Mont Blanc.

Some 4810m high it is the highest point in Western Europe and it's summit is covered by a permanent layer of ice 23m thick.

Seen from the centre of Chamonix though it actually appears a little smaller than the nearer, surrounding peaks due to the effects of perspective.

Mont Blanc was first acsended in 1786 by Dr Michel Paccard and Jaques Balmat. In the main square of Chamonix a statue dedicated to this feat of mountaineering depicts the two men looking toward Mont Blanc.

Today it is climbed on a daily basis with the aid of the Aiguille de Midi cable car and various huts and refuges along the route.
